Barbershop Chronicles | Cambridge | $$$
Barber shops in Africa (and America, for that matter) are a sacred male space, where guys gather to joke, gossip, complain, argue, hash out local issues and basically bare their souls. Nigerian playwright and poet Inua Ellams hops between shops in six different world cities, including Johannesburg, Harare, Kampala, Lagos and Accra, to explore the experiences of the African diaspora, and the complex social politics of being a man. The Barber Shop Chronicles has been a sold-out sensation in multiple London runs, resonating with audiences and critics alike for its deeply engaging sense of humor and humanity. And now it's coming to the Loeb Drama Center in Cambridge as part of its U.S. premiere tour.
