The debate will be moderated by Callie Crossley. District attorneys are the most powerful people in the criminal justice system – and they're accountable only to voters. Presenting a Poetry Reading by Denise Moyo | Natick

Solidarity is the gift that poetry gives us. Presenting Poetry Reading by Denise Moyo, author of: This Love is Like the Gitmo, No Longer Prodigal, Pregnant with Words and Out of the Water. Denise Moyo was born in Zimbabwe and later moved to the United States. She attended Boston University and is a licensed clinical social worker and licensed applied behavior analyst. In addition to her poetry, Denise is a songwriter.Doors Open at 1:00. Reading starts at 1:30. Refreshments will be provided at the reading.

Emotional Emancipation Circle | Cambridge

Emotional Emancipation Circles℠ were originated by Community Healing Network, Inc., (CHN), and are the product of a collaboration between CHN and the Association of Black Psychologists (ABPsi), and part of the larger global grassroots movement for emotional emancipation being spearheaded by CHN. The EE Circles℠ process is one of many strategies devised by CHN to build the movement for freedom from the lies of white superiority and Black inferiority, and other emotional legacies of enslavement and racism. EE Circles℠ are inspired by the self-help movement and grounded in the principles of Ma’at, the ancient Egyptian understanding of the fundamental order of the universe.

2018 Kite & Bike Festival | Dorchester

Selfish Women’s Group | Lynn

Local Author Vick Breedy is an advocate for women to lead healthier and happier lives by practicing self-care. Breedy created the Selfish Women’s Group to provide women with a space to address the issues that threaten their ability to practice self-care. She encourages women to be selfish with self-care and overcome the barriers and guilt associated with making themselves a priority. Breedy provides experts in the field of nutrition, fitness and counseling to guide the groups. The Selfish Women’s Groups are led by facilitators Paulomi Dave-Potter (MSW, LICSW), Lakisha Austin (MSW, MBA, LCSW) and Ashley Lissaint (Core Cardio Fitness Owner, MBA). Each facilitator helps attendees understand the importance of self-care, explore ways to practice it and identify behaviors that make it difficult to lighten the load women carry.

SMC celebrates local talent, diversity and community as part of our Speak Up Somerville! Telethon to raise funds for preserving community media. This one-day event will feature community performers and leaders, our dedicated producers and volunteers as well as SMC members, staff and other supporters who will be on the air asking for donations to support the station. The 12-hour Telethon will be filled with a variety of activity and entertainment (more details to come). The Telethon also kicks-off SMC’s yearlong fundraising initiative “The Speak Up Somerville! SMC Fund”.

Bomba Dance Workshop | Cambridge

Learn to dance Bomba and have fun!!!! Bomba dance and music arrived to Puerto Rico and the Caribbean in the 16th Century, from West Africa. In the present time, is becoming very popular because of its challenging communication between dancers and drummers, especially among children, youth and adults from New York, Philadelphia, Florida, Chicago and Boston. Some of the sister dance-and-music forms from the Caribbean are the Punta from Honduras, Tumba from Haiti and Gwoka from Guadalupe, among others. Students will learn to dance Bomba Sicá, Bomba Cuembé, Bomba Holandé and Bomba Yubá, among others, while learning the music and the history in a fun way. Skirts will be provided for women, but you are welcome to bring your own. Live Bomba drum music!! Enjoyable friends and family activity!
