Crossing the Line to Freedom: A Musical Narrative // Dorchester

Boston Lyric Opera and Castle of our Skins join forces to showcase the lives and stories of Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King Jr., and Paul Robeson through the music of opera. Paired with spoken word, art song, spirituals and history, their lives — and those of other legendary liberators — take center stage. The event is free and open to the public.

Garden Basics Workshop // Roxbury

Learn basic techniques for gardening in raised-bed gardens and other small spaces. This workshop is required for all Build-a-Garden applicants. Participants create a garden map, use the square-foot method, and learn from demonstrations of planting techniques. Facilitated by Nataka Crayton-Walker, professional gardener/farmer, and youth from The Food Project. Located at The Dudley Greenhouse, 11 Brook Avenue, Roxbury. MFA Film: Hoop Dreams // Boston

First exhibited at the 1994 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the audience award for best documentary, Hoop Dreams tells the true story of two black American teenagers who are plucked from a rough Chicago neighborhood and given the opportunity to play basketball for a legendary high school coach at a suburban prep school. William Gates and Arthur Agee soon discover that their dreams of NBA glory are not so easily achieved, as they encounter a series of obstacles including the intense pressures of academics, family life, financial troubles, and cutthroat athletic competition. What emerges is a sympathetic portrait of two black teenagers striving to live their dream, and a candid exploration of our society’s tendency to exploit young black athletes by making promises of fame and fortune that rarely come to pass.

Celebrating Douglass: A Bicentennial Forum // Roxbury

Join us for a special celebration of Frederick Douglass's Bicentennial! As part of Mass History Day this year, high school and middle school students from across the state submitted projects related to Douglass, African American history and more; the winners of the competition will be on hand to receive cash awards and to present their projects alongside noted Douglass scholars David Blight (Yale University), Lois Brown (Wesleyan University), and John Stauffer (Harvard University). After the forum, the afternoon will close with a specially commissioned, Fredrick Douglass-themed “choral poem” researched, written, and performed by high school student poets.
