We welcome all to come and share in our stories and to contribute your own as well. This is a public education initiative designed by ACE to engage Roxbury residents and allies to mobilize against predatory city administration development as well as envision sustainable alternatives together. Boston’s Trinidad Style carnival is celebrated in August, the weekend before Labor Day, and starts on Martin Luther King Boulevard in Roxbury, MA and travels about 1.2 miles to Franklin Park in Dorchester, MA. Judging of the bands typically takes place in front of the Franklin Park Zoo; and the Village market place is located directly in front of the Zoo.

A shrine is a sacred place or object. It can be religious, cultural, personal, political, public or private, dedicated to one deity or concept or person or event, or exist with a multitude of meanings and devotions. It can be deliberately created as a sacred place or object, or the object can evolve to be designated as sacred. It can be dedicated to the memory of the past, or represent a hope for the present or future.The show will function as a collective shrine, made up of our individual definitions and expressions of this vast topic. What do we find holy? As a society we are lacking a common mythology to give our lives spiritual meaning. We all find different ways to fill this void, often coming from our family traditions but filtered through time and place. It is our intent to celebrate the myriad fashions of shrining by showing them together in one space.

The City of Somerville will be getting three new murals this month, thanks to a mini mural festival produced by the Somerville Arts Council. From August 21st through August 31st, three internationally-renowned artists will be painting murals in East Somerville and Union Square. On August 26th join the artists for a meet and greet and Q&A session from 4 PM to 5 PM at the Somerville Media Center in Union Square, followed directly by a reception with music and food from 5 PM to 6 PM in front of the mural. The Q&A will be moderated by local artist Dave Ortega, the Programming Coordinator & Production Assistant at Somerville Media Center. We will get a chance to hear from the artists about the inspiration for their work, their process, and their experience making work in Somerville. Following the Q&A enjoy a celebration outside the Union Square mural (2 Union Square) with music from the Tarciso Alves Forró band and Venezuelan Pabellón bowls from Las Carolinas - one of our Nibble Entrepreneurs. Come dance and mingle with the artists and community members!
