Black Renaissance: A Celebration of Black Art | Roxbury | Free

In honor of influential Black voices and artistry that emerged from the Harlem Renaissance and beyond, Hibernian Hall and the A.R.T. community are joining to celebrate the arrival of "The Black Clown," a music theater experience that illuminates a Black man’s resilience against oppression. Featuring Davóne Tines in the title role leading a chorus of twelve, and a new score by Michael Schachter, this production fuses vaudeville, opera, jazz, and spirituals to bring Langston Hughes’ verse to life onstage. "The Black Clown" will open conversations around the complexity of the black male identity, and the history of music, dance, literature and visual art in the black community. Join us for refreshments, special performances from Boston-based artists and a sneak peek of "The Black Clown." We will end the night in a discussion with "The Black Clown" company members and open the mic to the community for remarks on the importance of black art and culture. This event is free and open to the public.

The National Campaign for Financial Literacy is affiliated with more than 4,000 financial learning centers across the US and Canada, teaching financial literacy to over 30,000 families monthly. We are partnering with the ABCD Neighborhood Service Center and offering a series of our complimentary workshops. We are proud to have Dr. Dolly Amaya, Harvard graduate, faculty, and financial professional; and her team presenting these workshops. Dr. Dolly brings a wealth of knowledge in academia and real life application experience, as an educator, agent of social change, and successful entrepreneur. Getting “Hard History” Right: An Evening with Teaching Tolerance | South End | $$

How should American slavery be taught? Most teachers agree the topic is critically important but lack the resources to do it justice. Teaching Hard History: American Slavery, a comprehensive framework and set of teaching materials, was designed to fill this gap. Join Teaching Tolerance and Professor Hasan Jeffries to learn more about Teaching Hard History and how it can help educators and students draw connections between historical events and present-day struggles for racial equality. You’ll hear about what we found in our year-long investigation into how the topic is taught and explore theTeaching Hard History Framework, which provides a blueprint for teaching how the world we inhabit today was shaped by slavery and its ideological progeny, white supremacy. The materials take advantage of new scholarship and primary sources, with each topic ending with pragmatic answers to the question, “How can I teach this?” The event is open to anyone working in the fields of education or racial justice and will include a panel discussion with educators and scholars, as well as a question-and-answer session.
