The Fierce Urgency of First: An Afterwork Events Mixer | Roxbury
When Black women are at the forefront of local and national issues systematic and generational change happens; this is nothing new! For decades, the Black woman has been activating this country, by fighting first and fiercely for fairer and equitable opportunities for all. Way before Hillary Clinton had her sights set on being the first female President of the United States, Shirley Chisholm put in a bid for the role in 1972 and forever changed the political landscape for all women in politics, especially women of color. The “Chisholm Effect” isn’t just theoretical prose or political jargon; it’s an undeniable reality that Black women have influenced and innovated the past 5 decades of our country’s political history, since Chisholm’s unprecedented run. In Alabama, Black female voters drew national attention for their outsized performance in December's special senate election! In Georgia, Stacey Abrams, a former state lawmaker, is an election away from being the first Black woman elected governor in the country. Massachusetts has the opportunity to change the course of history, join the fierce urgency of the present! Let’s make it Ayanna’s turn to be First.

RoxFilm20: Birth of a Movement | Fenway
Based on a book by journalist and professor Dick Lehr, Birth of a Movement presents a civil rights story told by many members of the Boston community. Griffith’s groundbreaking but notoriously Ku Klux Klan-sympathetic film The Birth of a Nation, unleashing a fight that still rages today about race relations, media representation, and the power and influence of Hollywood. Birth of a Movement investigates this early-20th-century clash between human rights, freedom of speech, and a changing media landscape, featuring prominent thinkers Vincent Brown, Robert Bellinger, Dick Lehr, Dolita Cathcart, Charlie Musser, David Blight, Spike Lee, and Reginald Hudlin, many of them based in Boston.

RoxFilm20: The Rape of Recy Taylor | Fenway
Recy Taylor, a 24-year-old black mother and sharecropper, was gang raped by six white boys in 1944 Alabama. Common in Jim Crow South, few women spoke up in fear for their lives. Not Recy Taylor, who bravely identified her rapists. The NAACP sent its chief rape investigator Rosa Parks, who rallied support and triggered an unprecedented outcry for justice. Our film tells the story of black women who spoke up when danger was greatest; it was their noble efforts to take back their bodies that led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott and movements that followed. The 2017 Global March by Women is linked to their courage. From sexual aggression on ‘40s southern streets to today’s college campuses and to the threatened right to choose, it is control of women’s bodies that powered the movement in Recy Taylor’s day and fuels our outrage today.
